Jennifer Lopez, Jewel Named "Women Of The Year" By "Glamour" Mag

Jewel and Jennifer Lopez have been selected by "Glamour" magazine as two of its "1999 Women Of The Year," who were officially named during a gala event Thursday night at New York City's Lincoln Center.

Jewel, who has just released a new seasonal record entitled "Joy: A Holiday Collection," has been recognized by "Glamour" for both her musical endeavors as well as her involvement with the Higher Ground For Humanity charity.

Higher Ground For Humanity promotes and helps raise funds for such philanthropic and human rights organizations as Families Helping Families and The Kudirat Initiative For Democracy.

Jennifer Lopez was honored by "Glamour" magazine for her acting, singing, and dancing abilities and for serving as a role model for New York City youth via various inner-city programs.

Others named on the "Glamour" magazine's list include "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, astronaut Eileen Collins, actress Camryn Manheim, eBay CEO Meg Whitman, and human rights

activist Mavis Leno.

Evelyn Lauder, who has raised $30 million for breast cancer research, was also chosen as one of the Women Of The Year, along with Aurelia and Lashonda Davis, the mother and daughter who won a lawsuit that makes schools responsible for student-on-student sexual harassment.

Rounding out the magazine's list was the U.S. Women's Soccer team, who won the 1999 World Cup in July before a record crowd of 90,000 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

In addition to the 1999 Women Of The Year, the editors have also named broadcaster Barbara Walters and former presidential candidate Elizabeth Dole as recipients of the magazine's "Lifetime Achievement" award.

Jewel will grace the cover of "Glamour" magazine's December issue, which includes profiles and photo spreads of all of the 1999 Women Of The Year. The issue is expected to arrive on newsstands on November 16.
