Green Day/Third Eye Blind Skirmish Results In Skull Fracture, Canceled Concerts

The annual Los Angeles radio station festival known as the KROQ Weenie Roast had a less than picnic-like vibe backstage where there was apparently a nasty scuffle between Third Eye Blind bassist Arion Salazar and Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt.

Details remain sketchy, but according to a source at KROQ, the trouble began with an argument between members of the two bands' camps. According to the station, Salazar then went on stage during Green Day's set, and was tackled by security guards who did not recognize him, prompting Dirnt to kick Salazar while he was down. The station said Salazar later hit Dirnt in the head with a beer bottle, sending him to the hospital with what we're told was a skull fracture.

There's no word yet from police on possible charges stemming from the incident.

Third Eye Blind's camp tells a different story, one that begins with Salazar and Dirnt meeting cordially. According to a statement released by Third Eye Blind's camp, Salazar's

appearance on stage during Green day's set was "in the spirit of an inter-band prank" as he slapped a bear hug on Dirnt.

Third Eye Blind's camp says that Salazar and Dirnt did indeed scuffle on stage and backstage after Green Day's set, but that it was a concerned fan who struck Dirnt with a bottle. According to Third Eye Blind, a tall, blond male who had been getting an autograph from Salazar thought the 3EB bassist was being attacked and struck Dirnt before disappearing into the crowd.

I am sorry that my attempt at doing something I thought would be funny escalated into Mike getting hurt," Salazar said in a written statement. "That was never my intention. I simply had too much to drink and made a very bad decision. If I had been in Mike's place, I would have acted similarly. My heart goes out to him and I hope he recovers quickly. We have many friends in common and I just hope that he can accept my sincerest apology. I am sorry Mike.

Green Day's

camp says it is unable to comment on the advice of the band's attorneys.

Green Day canceled Sunday night's concert in Sacramento, and is due to play some Canadian shows this weekend.

The incident occurred off camera after Green Day had been engaging in backstage rowdiness, [1MB Quicktime] which included breaking a window in a trailer according to the radio station.
