Bobby Brown Arrested For Sexual Battery

Bobby Brown was arrested in Beverly Hills, California at 4:15 a.m. Sunday on the charges of sexual battery. The former New Edition singer and husband of R&B vocalist Whitney Houston was released Sunday evening after posting $2,778 bail and must return to court on July 17.

According to the Associated Press, police apprehended Brown, who had been placed under citizen's arrest yesterday at the Beverly Hills Hotel, but further details of the alleged incident, including where it occurred, against whom it was perpetrated and who initially placed Brown under citizen's arrest, were not yet known.

The misdemeanor charge of sexual battery, which usually refers to one person touching another in a sexual manner against that person's will, carries a fine of up to $2,000 and six months in jail.

The New York Post" reported that a source indicated that Brown may have been set up by a tabloid, as both "The National Enquirer" and "The Star" feature cover stories this

week about the alleged break-up of Brown's rocky, six-year marriage to Houston, who was said to be at the couple's New Jersey home at the time of the arrest.

Brown, who was hurt last month in a driving accident near his New Jersey home (see [article id="1426617"]"Bobby Brown Injured In Car Accident"[/article]), denied the charges on Sunday night after being released from custody and said, "I wouldn't hurt nobody. I wouldn't touch nobody.

Brown's label refused to comment on either the rumors of his marital difficulties or his latest legal trouble, and calls to Houston's label for a comment had not been returned.

The singer's last run-in with the authorities came in January 1997, when both he and his entourage were cleared of any accountability related to a stabbing incident at a New York City hotel.
