Sting, Mary J., Moby, Sheryl Crow Show Love For Elton

A phalanx of star power will descend on 20th Century Fox's Stage 8 on February 21 for a black-tie gala honoring Elton John as the MusiCares Person of the Year.

20th Century Fox announced on Wednesday that it will host the affair, which will be attended by key members of the entertainment industry. Many of the attending artists, including Sting, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, Gloria Estefan, Natalie Cole, Sheryl Crow, and Moby will perform their own versions of Elton John classics at the gala, and an all-star finale is also expected.

Sir Elton John, who was so knighted by the Queen of England in 1998 for his philanthropic efforts, has sold 62 million albums in his 30-year career; been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; won Academy, Grammy, Golden Globe, and Tony Awards; and holds the record for the top selling single in the world (1997's "Candle In The Wind," re-recorded for Princess Diana's funeral).

On February 23, John will also receive the

Grammy Legend Award at the 42nd annual Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

John is being honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year for his contributions to both the music industry and his accomplishments raising money for AIDS patient care services and preventative education.

Elton is a musical hero for all of us," said Robert Kraft, the president of Fox Music, in a statement announcing the event.

The gala is to be preceded by a silent auction offering sports and music memorabilia. Proceeds from the auction go to the MusiCares Financial Assistance Program that provides musicians with medical and personal assistance.
