Beasties' Yauch Vows To Carry On As Tibetan Freedom Concert Goes Global

The fourth annual Tibetan Freedom Concert was a 24-hour affair this year, straddling four different time zones over the weekend and entertaining over 50,000 fans worldwide with shows in Tokyo, Amsterdam, Sydney and East Troy, Wisconsin, outside of Chicago.

Though a smaller affair than last year's Washington, D.C. event, this year's American show still gathered a crowd of 31,000 fans eager to see Tibet show founders the Beastie Boys, Rage Against The Machine, Run-DMC, The Cult, The Roots, and (speaking of roots) a very blond Eddie Vedder.

In the months leading up to this year's concert, speculation had swirled that '99's Tibetan Freedom Concert would be the last. Speaking with MTV News on Sunday, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch said that until the Chinese withdraw from Tibet or negotiate with exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, he pledged that he would continue his efforts to raise world consciousness.

[article id="1439111"]"We'll do whatever we can to be

supportive to the Tibet situation, and if it looks like doing concerts will benefit it, then we'll continue to do that,"[/article] Yauch told MTV News. [article id="1439111"]"If it looks like some other thing will help, then we'll do that, but hopefully there will be a change in the near future and we won't do them anymore. Maybe we'll do concerts that focuses on something else." [RealVideo][/article]

MTV News will have much more on the Tibetan Freedom Festival this weekend on "MTV News 1515" which airs Friday at 7:30p.m.
