Owl City's Adam Young Re-Emerges As Sky Sailing

Recordings are 'documented account of a shy boy from Minnesota,' singer tells MTV News of new project.

On Wednesday, Owl City's Adam Young announced to the world that he was launching a brand-new project: Sky Sailing.

Of course, the rather shy guy behind the shockingly successful, [article id="1625001"]out-of-the-basement-to-the-top-of-the-charts[/article] project did this in the quietest way possible: by starting a MySpace page and posting a pair of demos, both of which, it should be noted, sound a whole lot like Owl City, only with more acoustic guitar and slightly different lyrical themes.

That sort of makes sense, because Sky Sailing and Owl City are basically one in the same -- only Sky Sailing came first, as Young told MTV News in an e-mail on Thursday (May 6).

"Before there was Owl City, there was Sky Sailing," he wrote. "These recordings are a step into the past, the documented account of a shy boy from Minnesota with more hopes and dreams than he knew what to do with. I am so very excited to share it with you."

Why, thank you, Adam! Though the songs of Sky Sailing may pre-date OC, Young still plans to give them a proper release, with an album called An Airplane Carried Me to Bed (due June 13). There's no word on whether he'll tour under the new moniker, but his current world tour as Owl City does wrap May 12, and he doesn't return to the road until late August, when he'll open for John Mayer. So it would appear that he's got some time on his hands.

Of course, just last week, Young told MTV Radio he was planning to use the time away from the road to work on the follow-up to [article id="1637861"]his breakout Ocean Eyes[/article] album, tentatively due in December. Will Sky Sailing put that album on the back burner? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
