Take 5, Supremes Set Top This Week's Pop Releases

Fictional boy band 2gether release second LP.

Take 5, the latest act from Orlando, Fla., pop machine Trans Continental Records, will release their domestic debut on Tuesday, while a box set from Motown legends the Supremes also will hit stores.

Take 5 were formed under the guidance of Lou Pearlman, who launched Backstreet Boys and *NSync. Pearlman parted ways with both senior boy bands after much litigation.

Take 5, who have already released an album in and toured Europe and Asia, enlisted top-notch talent for their domestic debut, Against All Odds. Production wizard Timbaland and rapper Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott lent a hand to several tracks, and Dianne Warren and Gerald Levert have songwriting credits.

The quintet — none of whom is older than 19 — takes on more of an R&B flavor than their teen pop brethren, as evidenced by the album's first single, "Shake It Off" (RealAudio excerpt). Most of the LP's 14 songs, including "To Make You Love Me" and "Girl Next Door," deal with romantic themes.

Meanwhile, Motown Records will release a comprehensive four-CD box set celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Supremes, one of the most successful girl bands of all time.

The 88-song collection begins with two 1960 songs recorded as the Primettes and includes all 23 of the quartet's top-40 hits, such as "Run Run Run" and "Stop! In the Name of Love" (RealAudio excerpt). The collection also includes several demos, rarities and a total of 13 previously unavailable selections, as well as 15 newly released mixes.

The discs are accompanied by a 76-page booklet that includes essays by Motown founder Berry Gordy and music writers Brian Chin and David Nathan, as well as a complete Supremes discography.

The first 25,000 copies of the box set will include a fifth CD, with 11 live songs — including "Where Did Our Love Go" (RealAudio excerpt) and "Someday We'll Be Together" — recorded at various performances in the 1960s and '70s.

The second album from fictitious boy band 2gether also is due, as a soundtrack to the serial television drama about the band running on MTV. 2gether Again, like the group's first album, contains songs that balance the line between parody and imitation, with songs like "5gether" and "I Gave My 24-7 to You." (Sonicnet.com's parent company, Viacom, also owns MTV.)

Also releasing new albums Tuesday are Sarah Brightman, whose La Luna includes covers of songs by Dido and Procol Harum, and singer/songwriter John Wesley Harding, with The Confessions of St. Ace.
