Jared Leto Is The Joker: 9 Reasons Why He's The Right Clown For The Job

This is going to be fun.

It's official: as rumored, Jared Leto is the Joker.

The "Dallas Buyers Club" Oscar winner and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman will play the Clown Prince of Crime for David Ayer's "Suicide Squad," the DC Comics movie starring a metric butt ton of superstar actors including Will Smith, Tom Hardy, and maybe (maybe) Oprah Winfrey. How's that for a cast?

Still, it's Leto's upcoming turn as the Joker that we can't stop thinking about. He has huge, clown-sized shoes to fill, following on the heels of Joker legends like Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill (voice only, but that's all he needs!), and the late, great Heath Ledger. Does Leto have what it takes to live up to the Joker's legacy? We certainly have plenty of reasons to be intrigued.

1. For one, he has the laugh.

See the video above for more.

2. For another, he has the look.

Lanky, gaunt, with piercing eyes that stare straight through you; he has Joker menace to a tee.

3. He looks good standing next to Ben Affleck.

And that's important, because these dudes are going to choke each other out as Batman and Joker at some point down the line.

4. He's a chameleon.

Leto transforms himself for his roles, from something as simple as sporting ridiculous cornrows in "Panic Room," to something as complex as playing drug addicted trans woman Rayon in "Dallas Buyers Club." He's up for anything, and that's what you need from your Joker.

5. He looks good in purple.

That's important.

6. He's literally a rock star.

Joker's not a rock star, but he's certainly a showman. Leto has showmanship in spades.

7. He has an Oscar!

That's not nothing! He has proven, award-winning chops. That's as good a sign as any.

8. He chose carefully.

Last month, Leto told MTV that whatever he selected for his next project, it would be a very deliberate choice. Leto was rumored for a lot of roles over the past year, but this is the one he landed on. Clearly, it's the one he wanted; clearly, it's the one he feels ready for.

9. He's brave enough to do it.

How can anyone follow Heath Ledger's iconic turn as the Joker? It's a daunting prospect for any actor, so much so that some fans have wondered over the years since Ledger's death if anyone would have the guts to step up and take on the role. Looks like Leto is that man. If nothing else, he's confident enough to take this legendary character for a ride. Let's see what he's got.

Leto's Joker premieres in "Suicide Squad," hitting theaters in 2016.
