Kehlani Follows Her Own ‘Advice’ On Empowering New Song

She also unveiled her dreamy (and sweet and sexy and savage) album cover

Kehlani’s been through a lot this year, but she’s ending 2016 on an empowering note with the new song “Advice.”

The emotionally raw track finds ’lani mourning a broken relationship, but ultimately realizing she was able to rise from the ashes of devastation. “You had to break me, take me / To make me better / But I had to save me, baby / Now or never,” she sings.

After premiering “Advice” on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show this morning (December 1), Kehlani opened up about the healing message of the song.

“I was just out of a really bad relationship with someone who I really thought was going to be, like, the one person for me and ended up showing me so many times that they weren’t,” she explained, adding, “I realized there’s a bunch of girls who are going through the same thing and they needed to hear from somebody.”

“Advice” is set to appear on Kehlani’s debut album, SweetSexySavage, which drops on January 27. The album’s pre-order page on iTunes reveals that previously released tracks “Distraction” and “CRZY” also made the cut, but the other 16 tracks remain a mystery.

The Oakland singer unveiled the album’s dreamy cover art on Twitter yesterday, where she also opened up about the inspiration behind it. “As women we are told that we cannot be multi layered.. we are put in boxes.. we can't be all the above.. reclaim yourself,” she wrote.
