Frank Ocean’s First Interview In Years Is About Sneakers And Politics

Those kicks, tho

You hear that? It's the sound of a thousand screaming Frank Ocean fans when they realize a reporter had the chance to ask him anything — anything! — for a whole minute, and then spent most of it talking about his shoes.

At the last state dinner hosted by President Obama, Ocean — who attended with his mother, Katonya Breaux — dressed down his tux with a pair of Vans. This was the first thing noticed by the reporter who snagged him, and she asked if he had planned his outfit around the kicks. A simple answer for a simple question: "You can't think," he said. "You just have to do things."

Talk then turned to politics, namely what he was looking forward to at the event — "Asking Obama if he had fun these last eight years; just congratulating him, also" — and whether or not he'd endorse Hillary Clinton, either by performing at a Clinton-sanctioned event or in some other capacity.

Several artists have signed on for Clinton's upcoming Love Trumps Hate concert series, but Ocean won't be one of them. He answered with a quick "probably not" when asked if he'd be performing in support of Clinton's campaign, but didn't rule out the possibility of an endorsement — for her 2016 run or potentially her 2020 run, too.

"I don't know! We're running out of time, I think," he said. "We might have to catch her in four years."

Fair enough. And hey! Maybe he'll wear Vans for that potential Clinton concert, too.
