Here’s How The 'Power Rangers' Movie Will Honor The Original 'Mighty Morphin' Series

The cast of ‘Power Rangers’ tell MTV News how their film will pay homage to the original

Despite their new look, the Power Rangers are still very much mighty and morphin.

The cast of the upcoming Power Rangers movie — Becky G (Yellow Ranger), Ludi Lin (Black Ranger), Dacre Montgomery (Red Ranger), Naomi Scott (Pink Ranger), and RJ Cyler (Blue Ranger) — joined director Dean Israelite in MTV’s San Diego Comic-Con studio on Thursday to talk about their edgy, big-screen take on Saban Entertainment’s classic ’90s series. Cheesy kung fu and spandex costumes may be out, but the film hasn’t ditched everything that made the series so special.

“We dropped the ‘Mighty Morphin’ and it’s just Power Rangers,” Israelite told MTV’s Josh Horowitz. “I think it’s a conscious decision to note that we are taking this to a new reimagined, reinvented place, and that yes, it’s going to be the origin story of these five kids from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers — but we’re bringing it to its own arena.”

Montgomery described the film as a “coming of age” story for the Power Rangers, but that doesn’t mean the movie doesn't capture the fun of the original. In fact, among all of the teen angst and alien-fueled drama, it’s still “incredibly entertaining and fun.” (With Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, how could it not be?)

“There’s a lot that keeps the true essence of the original story, but it’s still relevant to now,” Becky G said. Lin added: “We stripped a few things away, but the Power Rangers are still there.”

And don’t you worry: According to the Pink Ranger herself, there will be plenty of Easter Eggs to keep fans of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers happy and entertained. #BringBackBulkAndSkull
