The Power Rangers Get A Major Makeover In This Might Morphin' First Look

How much defined, armored musculature is too much defined, armored musculature?

New team, new look.

When the first look at Elizabeth Banks's Rita Repulsa debuted online a few weeks ago, we were torn on Rita's modernized aesthetic. On one hand, it was sexy and edgy -- all of the adjectives director Dean Israelite has used to describe his Power Rangers big-screen reboot -- but it was also a far cry from the franchise's beloved source material. (Rita 2.0 takes her style cues from Lady Gaga, not early ‘90s Madonna, so bye-bye beautiful cone bra.)

Now, it appears as though Israelite's vision for an edgier Power Rangers has also morphed its way into the Rangers' new looks. EW has the first look at the Power Rangers' new, superhero-inspired suits -- and they are, um, different. Apparently, the new team -- starring Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy -- will wear "translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies."

Um. OK.

So ... are there separate armor compartments for each pec? How much armored musculature is too much armored musculature? All questions aside, unlike Rita's look, at least the new crystallized suits include visual throwbacks to the franchise's long-running mythology.

"The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis," Israelite told EW. "These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit." (And their boobs?)

Is that a pterodactyl we see atop Kimberly's pink helmet, or are we just projecting our own hopes and dreams onto it? Who can really say.

Anyway, Power Rangers hits theaters March 24, 2017.
