I've always pegged "O Holy Night" as one of the most pliable Christmas songs in the catalog. Depending on the performer, the carol can rush skyward full of drama, like on Mariah Carey's version, or it can retain its gentle hymn quality, the way Ellie Goulding does it on the version she released for free on Wednesday (Dec. 16).

"I recorded this for fun and as a *christmassy* thank you for all the beautiful support I've had this year ??," Ellie wrote of the song on Instagram. Indeed, Ellie had a big 2015, dropping a new album called Delirium in November and seeing her "Fifty Shades Of Grey" contribution "Love Me Like You Do" hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top 40.

Considering we got a new Fetty Wap original Christmas composition yesterday, I think it's only fair to ask every artist to honor a new holiday music ratio: For every classic song they cover, each performer should be tasked with writing and producing a new one to add to the canon. Just a suggestion.

Ellie does like pretty baller wearing that very regal crown on the song's artwork, so maybe she could do something called, like, "Christmas Crown" that's pretty much just an update of "Christmas Shoes" for jewelers. Or monarchs. Or both.
