Relive The Best High School Moments From 'Boy Meets World'

Here's what 'Girl Meets World's' third season should pay homage to.

Girl Meets World” is officially graduating to high school.

Disney Channel announced Wednesday (Nov. 25) that the “Boy Meets World” spinoff has been renewed for a third season. When the show returns in spring 2016, Riley Matthews, daughter of Cory and Topanga, will enter the harrowing world of SATs, chemistry and prom, with Maya, Lucas and all her pals by her side (so hopefully that love triangle will sort itself out soon). No word yet on whether Cory will pull a Mr. Feeny and follow them to high school as their teacher — but, c’mon, he has to, right?!

Ultimately, it’s great news that “Girl Meets World” is following its predecessor’s trajectory, because “Boy Meets World’s” high school seasons were its pinnacle. In celebration of that, here are some of the most memorable episodes from the show’s high school years that we hope “GMW” will recreate or pay homage to:

Season 2, Episode 7: “Wake Up, Little Cory”

“Boy Meets World” started to explore more mature themes once the gang hit high school in season two, and “GMW” will likely do the same. In this episode, Mr. Turner assigns the class a video project on love and sex. It’s ultimately an innocent and still-PG episode, but one that managed to bump up the maturity level a bit.

Season 3, Episode 3: “What I Meant To Say”

This episode has one of the most emotional moments in “BMW” history: Cory explaining his definition of love to Topanga, and Topanga realizing she loves him too. “GMW” has dealt with a lot of firsts so far, and here’s hoping the first “I love you” will be as heartachingly sweet as this one.

Season 4, Episode 2: “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow”

Topanga is a goddamn hero, as illustrated by this episode where she chops off her hair in the middle of the hallway to show Cory that looks don’t matter. So far, Riley is the perfect mix of her parents in “GMW” — which means she’s equal parts fearless (like her mom) and always second-guessing herself (like her dad). I’m hoping she’ll have a breakout moment like this one, though, to further prove she’s as badass her mom.

Season 4, Episode 15: “Chick Like Me”

In his effort to become a serious journalist for the school newspaper, Cory decides he and Shawn should go undercover as girls to find out what dating is like from girls’ perspectives. It’s a LOL-worthy episode but, naturally, has a moralistic lesson about empathy. I could TOTALLY see Maya pulling something like this.

Season 5, Episode 17: “And Then There Was Shawn”

This classic episode revolves around Shawn’s horror-comedy dream, resulting in a weird and hilarious spiral of events that’s basically “Breakfast Club”-meets-“Scream.” “Girl Meets World” already had a terrific Halloween episode, but this could bump up the scary and nostalgic factors even more.

Season 5, Episode 13: “The Eskimo”

Any episode that revolves around the friendship between Cory AND Topanga AND Shawn is an immediate winner in my book. The three of them have such an important but sometimes complicated dynamic (that’s usually what happens when two friends are dating), and this episode explores those relationships beautifully. Mr. Feeny teaches them a super valuable life lesson (shocker), teaching them that Shawn must learn to do things on his own, Cory needs to let Shawn do things on his own, and Topanga needs to learn that helping your friends is more important than being perfect. They all learn a little about themselves here, and the audience does too. “Girl Meets World” has been doing an excellent job of creating a multi-dimensional relationship with Riley, Maya and Lucas, and here’s hoping it’ll continue to do so.

Season 5, Episode 24: “Graduation”

This episode was such a fitting end to the high school years, giving shout-outs to fan-fave secondary characters like Minkus and Frankie, while also paving the road ahead for all the main cast. It had its comic moments — like Cory attempting to let chickens loose in the school as a senior prank — and plenty of touching moments, like Shawn’s self-aware graduation speech. And who can forget Topanga proposing to Cory in the middle of the graduation ceremony? The perfect ending. Hopefully, “Girl Meets World” will continue long enough to be able to wrap itself up as neatly as this.
