Perrie Edwards Is More Than Her Breakup

Little Mix's performances have nothing to with Zayn Malik.

Last night, Little Mix gave a bewitching, mind-boggling performance of "Black Magic" at the Teen Choice Awards -- probably their best TV performance of their career. The British group won over the American crowd with their hilarious acting (they ~pretended~ to be nerds in the first few seconds), their smooth harmonies and that baffling costume change that we're still trying to figure out. Immediately after, the foursome won Choice Breakout Artist -- their first American award ever. Needless to say, it was a big night for them.

But you might not know that if you browsed Monday morning's (Aug. 17) headlines.

Around the same time of the Little Mix performance, Perrie Edwards' ex-fiance Zayn Malik made the aforementioned "Twitter diss" by retweeting something that pitted LM against fellow vocal group Fifth Harmony. That news quickly overtook the fierceness that was the "Black Magic" performance and twisted it into a "revenge performance." Obviously, it was not.

One article even went as far to say that Perrie had a "revenge body," as if a) her body was means of getting back at a man, and b) it was OK to even use that label.

This happens all too often: the storyline of a breakup overshadows the work of a woman, and we end up viewing her every move in the context of her relationship. Here's more proof:

It's laughable, actually -- especially because we just did this last year with Selena Gomez. Selena posts picture of ocean? She must be contemplating her lost relationship. Oh, she's hanging out with other people? She trying to make Justin Bieber jealous.

Little Mix is getting bigger by the second. They're gearing up for the release of their third album, Get Weird, they're winning awards in the U.S., doing promo everywhere you turn -- not to mention that "Black Magic" is one of the best pop hits of this year. They continue to have a moment. And even if Perrie's personal life keeps getting pushed at them, they try to make their own spectacle -- like when bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock blocked the paparazzi from getting a sad, post-breakup photo of Perrie by breaking into dance in the street.

In the world of celebrity gossip, Perrie and Zayn's breakup was one of the biggest stories of the year, but Little Mix is making their own story. I'd rather celebrate Little Mix's scene without it being diluted with gossip, so let's salute the work they're doing -- you know they deserve it.
