Why Is A North Carolina Radio Station Playing Only Drake Songs?

'Drake 92.7' is real -- or is it?

There are surely some devoted Drake fans out there who've turned their cars, homes, offices, etc. into personal Drake-only radio stations, blaring cuts from each of his album and mixtapes (and nothing else) deep into the evening hours. And then there's "Drake 92.7" -- a real radio station in Charlotte, North Carolina that's been broadcasting Drake songs exclusively since Friday (August 14).

"Request your favorite Drake joint right now!" an on-air promo stated earlier, giving a phone number to call for requests: 704-548-7863. In the past hour, they've hit "Headlines," "0 To 100" and Rihanna's "What's My Name?" (which features Drizzy) and plenty of others because, like we said, it's literally non-stop Drake. (You can tune in here.)

But why? As The Fader points out, the station only has an Instagram account and the above phone number for reference points. Apparently there's going to be a "special announcement" on Monday as well -- but in the meantime, listeners have developed their own theories.

Drake bought the station.

While it would make total sense (and has been mentioned by The Fader as well as Urban24), there's no actual proof Drake has taken steps to purchase this frequency. Plus, there's some confusion as to whether or not he legally could as he's a Canadian citizen -- although the FCC did pass legislation in 2013 relaxing the ban on foreign bids for U.S. stations. So, it could be, but it's probably not likely.

A local urban station has taken over the frequency.

This seems like the most probable outcome, and there are some telling signs in the local radio market that could point to this being the case. WPZS, the gospel station that formerly broadcast on the 92.7 frequency, has since moved to 100.9, freeing up 92.7. It seems reasonable to conclude that another entity moved in and switched the format to hip-hop. That's how Urban24 views it, anyway.

The Illuminati is behind it.

You really just never know.

So far, no word from Drizzy himself... unless you consider this ping-pong match to be some kind of metaphor for the grand volley of life and medium-market hip-hop radio stations in the mid-Atlantic states.
