It’s no secret that Zayn Malik has been on a massive social media spree lately. Not only has he been tweeting more often than usual (and just as cryptically, of course), but he’s also been following an intriguing mix of peers, many of whom we pointed out could be possible collaborators.

When the former One Directioner recently followed Selena Gomez, though, many fans immediately dubbed it a flirtatious move. But before we all send our Zaylena ‘ship boats out to sea, Sel has her own thoughts on the follow seen ‘round the world.

In a new interview with BBC Radio 1, Selena explained that she does know Zayn IRL, so she doesn’t think it’s “weird” that he gave her a follow.

“I had no idea what that was until somebody else asked me, and obviously I know Zayn, though, so it’s not like a weird thing,” she said. “I just didn’t know who followed me. Thanks for the follow, Zayn!”

Asked if she followed him back, Selena admitted she hadn’t, but vowed to get on that (as of now, though, she still hasn’t made good on that commitment — get to it, girl!).

“Did I [follow him back]? I don’t know, I don’t think I did but I will right now. I should do it,” she said.

Even if sparks don’t fly between Sel and Zayn, it’s worth noting that maybe they’d form an interesting friendship. After all, their artistic goals seem to be strikingly similar these days. Z has said he’s looking forward to making “real” music that more accurately represents who he is, a move made clear with his recent RCA Records deal. Selena, meanwhile, has called her upcoming album, Revival, a rebirth of sorts for her, and something that’s pushed her outside of her comfort zone.

“That’s kind of where Revival came from… all of these things, all of the songs that have come into my life are so fresh and so different and funky and cool and sensual,” Selena told BBC Radio 1, adding that, much like Zayn, she’s “going in a new direction.”

“It just kind of happened that way and I can’t wait for people to hear that.”
