All Hail Our New Teen Queen, Bella Thorne

Former Disney starlet Bella Thorne is about to blow up.

Bella Thorne is having a moment.

The 17-year-old former Disney star has landed the lead role in the not-so-typical teen romance "Midnight Sun," opposite Patrick Schwarzenegger.

The YA film, based on a 2006 Japanese film, follows Katie, a 17-year-old who suffers from a disease that makes her skin so sensitive to sunlight that even the tiniest exposure could be fatal. Everything changes, of course, when she falls in love with a boy named Charlie and they embark on a Pinterest-perfect summer romance.

Thorne is also working on adapting Rebecca Serle's popular novel "Famous in Love," with "Pretty Little Liars" boss lady Marlene King, for ABC Family. According to King, it was Thorne who approached her with the idea of adapting the addictive YA novel for television. Now, King is penning the script with Serle, and Thorne has been cast in the leading role.

"'Famous in Love' is about a girl who gets plucked from obscurity from UCLA to star in a new sort of, like, 'Twilight' saga, and it's about her balancing fame and all of that with falling in love with two boys," Bella told MTV News when we caught up with her at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards.

The whole concept of a young girl being thrown in front of the spotlight is something that Thorne can totally relate to. "This mirrors a lot of my life," she explained. "If you ever wondered what it's like to be Kristen Stewart or Natalie Portman or anything like that, we're taking you inside of that. And since we’re all actors, we really understand the way it should be. So it's going to be real."

With King and Serle and the helm, and Thorne as the star, we think "Famous in Love" could be ABC Family's next great hit, especially now that "Pretty Little Liars" is wrapping things up. Plus, it could be a huge launching pad for Thorne's career.

Most known for her role as super talented dancer CeCe Jones on Disney Channel's "Shake It Up," Thorne has been steadily making a name for herself in Hollywood, landing parts in "The Duff" and MTV's new series "Scream." However, we're ready to see her play something other than the token mean girl. Thorne totally has what it takes to be the industry's new teen "It" girl -- à la Jennifer Lawrence, Shailene Woodley and Chloë Grace Moretz.

She's charming, talented and everything she says/tweets is totally LOL-worthy. (Trust us, her sarcasm is on par with JLaw's.)

Not to mention, it's kinda nice to celebrate a new teen queen who totally embraces her title. Thorne is an active YA reader who totally fangirls over Ed Sheeran, love selfies and lives on Instagram. She totally gets it. We def can't wait to see her blow up in 2016.
