Good Kid, Great Influence: 11 Times Kendrick Lamar Changed Young Lives

K. Dot's showing us why he was named a 'Generational Icon.'

Kendrick Lamar knows how to make an impact.

On Tuesday, Jun. 9, Kendrick showed this when he surprised high school students at their "Hip-Hop Ed" course in New Jersey. His appearance most likely left a lasting impression, but this was just the latest instance of K. Dot making a difference.

Here's a look at more times Kendrick changed lives:

When Kendrick Went Back To His Own High School

And he delivered a super positive message.

"I want y'all to know I'm the same face," he said to the students in attendance. "When you look in the mirror, you're lookin' at me...I wanna let y'all know. Put positivity in your life. You can do anything you want to do. I swear to you. Seriously, my life did a complete 360 once I started thinking positive and putting God in my life."

When K.Dot Found Out He Saved A Fan’s Life While Onstage

“I see this young lady crying, and I’m thinking, She must be really going through something right now,” Kendrick told MTV News last month. “Then I start hearing her murmur with her lips, ‘You saved my life.’ So I’m like, 'Damn. This is serious. This is not for play, why she’s out here right now.' She came to see the person that actually helped her get through a life, through music.”

K. Dot was so moved that he made her dream come true when he let her come on stage with him.

He Also Schooled Students In Alaska

And he got to reflect upon his own educational experiences while there.

“I always wanted to write. My teachers pushed me to write, so English was always my favorite subject,” he said at the time. “I never knew how much of a big deal it would be in my career until I really sat back and looked at all my old-school papers and found out these vocabulary words that I learned over the years.”

And Encouraged Great Attendance At A H.S. Assembly

"You [raising] your attendance is just as important as me being on this stage right now," Kendrick said to the Mount Pleasant High School students in Rhode Island. "That's important to me...That's well accomplished. I appreciate every last one of you for doing that."

...Where He Also Let This Student Interview Him

This one-on-one sit-down was actually pretty revealing. In the interview, Kendrick spoke about his high school days and the obstacles he's had to overcome.

"I think the biggest obstacle is fear," he said. "Having a fear of failure. That was my biggest fear, the chance that I wouldn't be successful. That's the number one thing that stops people from achieving their goals...I had to dig deep inside myself and with faith in God, in order to get where I wanted to get in life."

...And Had This Student Sing For Him

She wowed the crowd. Just check out her skills.

He Rapped With Teens For Reebok

Who doesn't want to be on a huge ad with their favorite MC?

"Sometimes the most riskiest things you can do, it end up being the most important," Dot said in this black-and-white clip for the shoe brand. And the video also featured kids showcasing their own talents.

Plus Did A Duet With A Fan

"good kid" is no easy track to rap along to. So, some fans might be nervous to perform it next to Kendrick. But this fan's rendition was pretty impressive. "She killed that sh-t," Kendrick said after the performance. She not only represented what I do, I truly appreciate that, but she represented everyone of y'all."

Dot Also Freestyled With This Aspiring MC

Who doesn't want to drop some bars with K. Dot? This lucky MC got his shot during a concert where Kendrick let him spit some rhymes. Afterwards, Lamar had nothing but great things to say about him.

"That's love," Kendrick said after their impromptu two-man cypher. "To come up here and freestyle, that's love. True MC sh-t. True rap sh-t. You dig that?"

And TDE Gave Christmas Toys Out In Watts

In December, Kendrick Lamar and the entire TDE family gave toys out to families in Watts, California. The crew didn't just do that, though; they also performed many of their hits for a crowd of supporters and friends who watched the label's rise from California's underground to a global rap powerhouse. As you can see, many kids' had a special Christmas thanks to K. Dot and the TDE crew.

We're sure Kendrick isn't done making a difference. The MC - who earned a Generational Icon Award last month - is just about to turn 28 this month and it looks like he's got years of life-changing experiences to provide.
