5 Years Later, 'Pretty Little Liars' Still Hasn't Answered These Questions

Let's go back... back to the beginning.

If you're the kind of person who craves instant gratification, then "Pretty Little Liars" isn't the show for you. For the last five years, "PLL" has kept us guessing -- more like agonizing, tbh -- over the identity of the show's enigmatic hoodied villain A, and with an answer seemingly on the horizon (lol), it's time to take a look back on the episode that started it all: "Pilot."

Creator Marlene King has been plotting A's big reveal since the pilot, so naturally, there are still some unanswered questions from that very first episode -- which aired five years ago today (June 8). As we started to piece together Ali's last night in Rosewood, one thing was glaringly clear: we still don't know the whole story.

When you watch the pilot now, it feels so simple. It was before Aria knew about Ezra's secret true crime novel, before Emily came out and before Caleb ever stepped foot in Rosewood. Little did we know, the events of this pilot would lay the groundwork for one of TV's craziest plots. So without further ado, here's every unanswered question from the pilot:

Who is Charles?

Charles PLL Gif

The first scene of the pilot takes us back to the night Ali disappeared. The girls are having a boozy sleepover in Spencer's barn on a dark and stormy night (of course), talking about Beyoncé (natch), and when they wake up, Ali is gone. Flash forward five years and now we know who prompted Ali to leave: Ezra. That being said, we also know Charles was lingering in the shadows, as King has confirmed Charles was in the pilot. We know Mrs. DiLaurentis was the one who nearly buried Ali alive but we still have no idea who hit her over the head with a rock. Our guess is it was Charles.

What's up with Wren?

ABC Family

Wren PLL

Six seasons in and we still don't know what Wren's deal is, but we do know that he's shady af. His shady behavior was perfectly on display in the pilot episode -- despite being ENGAGED to Melissa, he kissed her younger sister Spencer (ugh). Since the pilot, Wren has been one of the most enigmatic characters in the series. We're not quite what side Melissa's on-again, off-again boyfriend is on, and that's unsettling.

Who killed Bethany Young?

ABC Family

Ali DiLaurentis on PLL

We know Melissa buried the body, but who the eff killed her? For a while we believed it might have been Spencer, as she was in the middle of a drug-fueled psychotic episode, but that theory was squashed when Ali told Spencer she didn't kill anyone. So the final minutes of Bethany Young's life are, sadly, still a huge mystery.
