Is Harley Quinn Moving On From The Joker In ‘Suicide Squad?'

We sure hope so. Get outta there, girl!

Harley Quinn and the Joker have a pretty unconventional relationship -- heck, it's really abusive and terrible when you come right down to it. But at the same time, it's hard to picture Harley with anyone else (unless, of course, you're an avid Harley/Poison Ivy fan), since she was created from the beginning to complement the Joker since her first "Batman: The Animated Series" in 1992.

But judging from preliminary pictures of the "Suicide Squad" movie, which is currently being filmed in Toronto for a 2016 release, Harley is getting herself picked up (pretty literally, in fact) by someone new: namely Floyd "Deadshot" Lawyton, as played by Will Smith.

Believe it or not, this isn't just an excuse to get Will Smith and former "Focus" co-star Margot Robbie in a situation where they can show off their amazing chemistry with each other -- because Harley and Deadshot DO actually get together in the comics.

In the New 52 reboot of "Suicide Squad" that took place in 2011, Harley straight up leaves the Joker to join the Squad and finds herself attracted to Deadshot, the team's leader. The two reformed villains even hook up, but it never gets very serious -- and things become complicated when the Joker goes missing and is assumed dead, which causes Harley to go running off to look for him. But that's a story for another time. A really messed up story, as a matter of fact.

So will the movie follow suit with these two characters? Honestly, we can't say for sure -- though this pic is way too reminiscent of that scene from "Avengers: Age of Ultron" with Vision and Scarlet Witch for us not at at least assume they're alluding to the pair's comic book history, at the very least.

Either way, we hope that the "Suicide Squad" writers treat Harley's emotional journey with respect -- she's a much more complicated character than you'd think. Plus, she's great on her own without having to depend on a man in her life. Seriously, just ask her Roller Derby team.

"Suicide Squad" hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
