20 Things We Learned From Eminem's Genius Annotations

Slim Shady speaks about Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, triumphs and frustrations.

After teasing the world with a new song recently, Eminem decided to take a trip down memory lane with some revealing and in-depth commentary on some of his most notable songs when he made a whopping 42 annotations with Genius.com on Thursday (Apr. 2).

The Michigan MC used the platform to open up about his drug use, his insecurities and his career. Yep, these annotations have us reminiscing about the early Slim Shady years, but Em also has us hoping for even more new music soon.

Here's a look at some of Em's most revealing annotations.

Eminem Didn’t Know “Stan” Would Be A Huge Hit

"I remember Mark The 45 King sent me that beat [for 'Stan']. And when I first heard it, I was like, 'Holy sh-t.' But I didn’t know it was going to be so big. When I was writing it, I just thought, 'Whoa, people are going to get sick of this because it goes on for so long.'" - Eminem annotating "Stan"

50 Cent’s “In Da Club” Came Out Because of A Coin Flip

"We couldn’t decide on the first single from Get Rich [Or Die Tryin']. It was going to be either 'If I Can’t' or 'In Da Club.' We were torn, so me, 50, Paul [Rosenberg], Chris Lighty, and Jimmy Iovine decided to flip a coin." - Eminem, annotating "In Da Club"

Eminem Calls Kendrick Lamar And Drake Competitive MCs

"I believe that anybody who competitively raps — like Drake and Kendrick and Jay Z — raps to be the best rapper. People diss each other, but it’s more in the vein of 'How can I kill you with record sales? Or with a flow? How can I be better than you at making records, at punchlines, metaphors, wordplay, syllables?'" - Eminem, annotating "Biggie/Tupac Live Freestyle"

Eminem Explains Why Hip-Hop Was Torn By Tupac Vs. Biggie

"When you have two rappers like Biggie and Tupac getting into it, you get the hip-hop community torn. No one wants to see something real happen. If for a second you entertain the idea of that being entertaining, if something ever happened out of that? No. That’s not healthy." - Eminem, annotating "Biggie/Tupac Live Freestyle"

Eminem Says DJ Premier’s Sound Won’t Ever Go Out Of Style

"Premo’s sound never goes out of style. That rawness he has is incredible. The production on the PRhyme album is updated but still sounds like Premo. It reminds you of those Gang Starr records. The kicks and the snares are ridiculous." - Eminem, annotating "PRhyme"

Battling Is Healthy For Hip-Hop

"Battle rap is healthy for hip-hop. The entire battle scene, the way that it’s thriving right now and how big it’s becoming and everything—it’s great. There’s something to be said about two guys, facing each other and squaring off. But if you take any of those raps and put them on a record, that turns into fighting, for some reason." - Eminem, annotating "Tsu Surf Vs. Hollow Da Don"

He's A Lisa Lampanelli Fan

"Have you ever seen Lisa Lampanelli? She takes the piss out of herself while she says these ridiculous things. You’re like, 'That was f--ked up,' and then she comes right behind it with some self-deprecating thing about herself. She’s figured out a way to weave certain things together that’s very clever." - Eminem, annotating "Shady XV"

Eminem Wants To Keep Himself In Check

"When I’m pushing boundaries, I want to make sure that I keep myself in check. I want you to know that this rhyme might be f-cked up or funny or not, or whatever. I’m aware of it and I know I’m probably f--ked up for saying it." - Eminem, "Shady XV"

Eminem Thought His Career Was Over Before It Started

"I come off stage [after a lost battle]. I’m like, 'That’s it. It’s over for me.' This kid from Interscope, Dean Geistlinger, walks over and he asks me for a copy of the CD. So I kind of just chuck it at him. It was The Slim Shady EP." - Eminem, annotating "8 Mile: Final Battle"

Eminem Loves AZ And Nas, But Hated Being Compared To Them

"People were saying that I sounded like AZ and Nas. I was upset. Not to say that I didn’t love AZ and Nas, but for a rapper to be compared to someone, for people to say that you sound like someone else — nobody wants that. I had to go back to the drawing board." - Eminem, annotating "Just Don't Give A F-ck"

Eminem Used Slim Shady To Express His Frustrations

"When I started rapping as Shady, as that character, it was a way for me to vent all my frustrations and just blame it on him...It was a way for me to be myself and say what I felt. I never wanted to go back to just rapping regular again." - Eminem, annotating "Just Don't Give A F--k"

Eminem And Dr. Dre Still Recall Their First Studio Session Very Differently

"'My Name Is' was the first song we recorded. We recorded three or four that day, in like six hours. One song was called “Ghost Stories” and one was 'When Hell Freezes Over.' I feel like there was one more but I can’t remember what it was. We always have this discussion, because Dre says it’s four." - Eminem, annotating "My Name Is"

Eminem Saw His First Official Video Ever On MTV

"We saw it for the first time on MTV. It came on really late at night. I was sleeping on the couch when Paul saw it for the first time. That’s when it was like, 'Okay, this isn’t a joke anymore.'" - Eminem, annotating "My Name Is"

Eminem Was Inspired By Labi Siffre And Dr. Dre

"Dre put on the Labi Siffre record, and I was just like 'Hi! My name is!' That beat was talking to me. I was like, 'Yo, this is it, this is my shot. If I don’t impress this guy, I’m going back home and I’m f--ked.' I knew Dre wasn’t an easy person to please." - Eminem, annotating "My Name Is"

Eminem Wanted The Shady CXVPHER To Stand Out

"It was a take on what BET had done, where they set up these ciphers for their hip hop awards. We decided to record each guy in his home environment, to make it into more of a film. Also, doing it acapella — which BET never did — made it unique." - Eminem, annotating "The Shady CXVPHER"

Eminem Actually Freestyled Parts Of The Shady CXVPHER

"The whole 'CXVPHER' is not off the top of the head freestyles. We wrote most of that, but the parts where I stop and say 'I made that up,' those rhymes were made up on the spot." - Eminem, annotating "The Shady CXVPHER"

Eminem Is Obsessed With Multi Syllable Rapping

"When I’m writing, I’m in the syllable game. I’m connecting 5-6-7-8 syllable phrases where every syllable rhymes. I get heavy into that. When I start rapping something, and I think of more syllables that connect with it, sometimes I want to just keep the scheme going forever." Eminem, annotating "Renegade"

There Is Actually A Voice Of Reason In The Shady Camp

"I always wanted to make sure that people knew what I was doing. That’s part of what Paul’s role was in the skits. He was the adult. We wanted people to know that we knew this sh-t was f--ked up and pushing the envelope, but that there was still a voice of reason somewhere." - Eminem, annotating "White America"

He Thinks Most People Don’t Catch His Rhymes

"Me and Royce [Da 5'9"] talk about this sh-t all the time. We sit here and spend so much time connecting all these twenty syllable words and phrases, and most people don’t catch them." - Eminem, annotating "Right For Me"

Eminem Doesn’t Remember Recording The Original “Lose Yourself"

"This is going to sound stupid, but I have no recollection of the demo version on 'Shady XV.' Paul remembers me doing that but I don’t know where I recorded it, I don’t even know when I recorded it. I did a lot of drugs, so my memory is all over the place." - Eminem, annotating "Lose Yourself (Original Demo Version)"
