'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1' Did Something That No Other Movie Has Done This Year

The odds are ever in this franchise's favor.

The latest installment of Katniss Everdeen's plight as rebel savior of Panem just bested every other 2014 film at the box office cornucopia. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" had the largest opening day of the year on Friday, reeling in $55 million in the U.S.

Variety is projecting the third "Hunger Games" installment will make upwards of $130 million domestically this weekend – the top debut showing of 2014.

Despite the box office best, "Mockingjay – Part 1" lost the race against its predecessors: it opened at lower Friday numbers than the previous two installments ("The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" grossed $70 million in its Friday debut; "The Hunger Games" made $67 million). Regardless, analysts are saying "Mockingjay - Part 1" will win the war: they project it'll gross between $925 million and $1 billion worldwide – "Catching Fire" made $865 million.

As "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1" continues to blaze a trail through ticket sales, critics and celebs alike can't stop buzzing about it.
