Do First Week Album Sales Matter? Theophilus London Doesn't Think So

Art over sales.

Theophilus London released his second album Vibes on November 4, and since it was executive produced by Kanye West, some people assumed that it would rack up big numbers with first week sales. But it didn't.

Theophilus sold 2,718 copies and he isn't upset about it at all -- as a matter of fact, he thinks that anyone who's betting on first week sales is pretty ridiculous.

In a series of tweets on Thursday morning (November 13), the Brooklyn rapper explained that the progression of his art is way more important that the number of copies moved.

"My label dosent even kno how to sell vibez! I win in endorsements / how sexy I am / the shows I play etc. Dolo entertainment since day 1," he added, criticizing Warner Bros. "Some people def just got fired. I don't sell records I make art and I innovate #creation!"

"I dead ass need just six talented people with ideas in a small officeZ and I don't have that. I'm happy about the type of art I make! that's all that matters to me! my job is to innovate! Create a new formula lane for the kids next."

Although Taylor Swift is still achieving the rare feat of going Platinum in week one, it's pretty safe to say that record sales have been consistently declining over the past few years.

Racking up high numbers in seven days is definitely a source of bragging rights -- just take newcomer Logic, who nearly tied with veteran rapper T.I. in week one sales last month -- but is Theophilus right? Are these numbers becoming completely arbitrary?
