Matthew McConaughey Is Excited To Be 'Whoever I Want To Be' In The Dark Tower

Watch McConaughey discuss his character with MTV News

Matthew McConaughey's first foray into franchises couldn't be any more epic, as he takes on Idris Elba's gunslinger in the long-awaited big-screen adaptation of The Dark Tower.

MTV News caught up with the mystical man in black at the STX Entertainment presentation at CinemaCon on April 12, where McConaughey was promoting his film Free State of Jones, and the actor opened up about the enigmatic figure he's portraying in the forthcoming Dark Tower adaptation.

"I'm not a big sci-fi buff... this one came along, though," McConaughey said. "The man in black, I looked at that and said, 'Oh, I can be whoever I want to be in this one.' I'm not sure who I'm going to be yet."

For those unfamiliar with Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, the man in black is an ageless sorcerer who seeks to reach the tower -- the one that stands at the nexus point in time and space, of course -- and rule over its seemingly infinite kingdoms.
