Cypress Hill Debut Shines At #4

The rap group come out with Skull & Bones.

In its first week of release, Cypress Hill's two-disc album Skull & Bones lands at #4 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart.

Guest appearances on Skull & Bones include Eminem, Everlast, Noreaga and Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk.

On the first disc, DJ Muggs keeps up the Cypress Hill tradition of smoked-out, funked-up tracks. Muggs's kaleidoscope of electronic samples at times sounds like a shattered window fusing itself back together. On introspective tracks such as "(Rap) Superstar" (RealAudio excerpt) and "We Live This Shit," B-Real reflects upon the paradoxes of success in the hip-hop game.

"When you first come out and you're really hot, the world really expects you to be supernatural, and everything you do has to be like the ultimate bomb," Cypress Hill rapper Sen Dog (born Senen Reyes) said recently. "We've never forsaken our style for the money or the position in the music."

Bones, the second disc, features Cypress Hill's heavy-metal persona. SX-10, Sen-Dog's rock/rap project, assists the rap group in fusing freestyle and feedback instrumentation on songs such as "(Rock) Superstar" and "Get Out of My Head."

If you dig Bones, stay tuned for SX-10's first album Mad Dog American, due July 4. "Lyrically and musically," Sen-Dog said in a press release, "it's the best record I've ever done in my life." Cypress Hill will launch a tour with SX-10 this summer. Dates are not confirmed.

Da Brat's Unrestricted, funkdafied with R&B hooks and Jermaine Dupri beats, drops from #3 to #6. Other hip-hop albums in the top 10 include the "Romeo Must Die" soundtrack at #5, DMX's ... And Then There Was X at #9 and Jay-Z's Vol. 3 ... Life and Times of S. Carter at #10.

504 Boyz' bouncy "Wobble Wobble" (RealAudio excerpt) remains at the top of Billboard's Rap Singles chart, while the Ying Yang Twins's booty-shakin' "Whistle While You Twurk" sits at #2.

"A couple years I made 'em say 'Uhh'; now I'm gonna make 'em 'Wobble Wobble,' " Master P said last week about his new supergroup's first single.

Behind 504 Boyz and Ying Yang Twins are: Nelly's quickly rising "(Hot S**t) Country Grammar" (RealAudio excerpt) at #3, Miracle's "Bounce" at #4, Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz's "I Like Dem Girlz" at #5, Missy Elliott's "Hot Boyz" at #6, Black Star nonprofit project Hip-Hop for Respect's "One for Love Pt. 1" at #7, Black Rob's "Whoa!" at #8, Jay-Z's "Anything/Big Pimpin'" at #9 and Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Got Your Money" at #10.
