Abigail Fits Into #1 Club-Play Slot

Enrique Iglesias slips to #8 while Jennifer Lopez cracks top 10.

Club-music veteran Abigail moves into the #1 slot this week on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, and Latin sensation Enrique Iglesias' "Be With You" drops from the top slot down to #8.

"If It Don't Fit," an upbeat dance tune with disco-era beats, was produced by the hot Thunderpuss 2000 team of Chris Cox and Barry Harris and was released as Abigail's debut on the Strictly Rhythm imprint Groovilicious Music.

"She's got a really strong fanbase," said Davey Gold, club-promotions director for Strictly Rhythm. "She did a lot of covers in her early days that were big hits in the gay community."

Abigail is one of the top-selling dance artists at Gramaphone Records in Chicago, according to its club-music buyer, Michael Serafini.

"I don't like it personally," Serafini said. "But that progressive house sound has been hot for the last five years."

Abigail has used her rich alto voice to record dance versions of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion," Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and k.d. lang's "Constant Craving" for small labels and various dance compilations.

The latter was #1 on Dance Music Authority's Hi-NRG International chart for 19 weeks in 1995, exposing the singer all around the world. The covers were included on an album that year called Feel Good, which was released on ZYX Records.

Abigail's 1999 single "Let the Joy Rise," released on Interhit/Priority, caught the ear of execs at Strictly Rhythm, who plan to market the singer as their major act this year.

Meanwhile, Latin songstress Veronica climbs two spots to #2 with "I'm in Love," now in its sixth week on the chart.

Lara Fabian, a French singer who has sold more than 6 millions records in her native country, moves to #3 with "I Will Love Again." The single also was remixed by Thunderpuss 2000, along with New York house mainstays Hex Hector and David Morales.

"Release," by Afro Celt Sound System, continues to climb the chart, reaching #4 this week. The single, from the group's 1999 Grammy-nominated Volume 2: Release, features remixes by house icons Masters at Work and Rollo, from dance act Faithless.

"Share My Joy," by GTS featuring Loleatta Holloway, is #5, and "I Don't Know What You Want but I Can't Give It Any More" (RealAudio excerpt) by the Pet Shop Boys is #6. Alice Deejay's pop crossover hit "Better Off Alone" falls four spots to #7, and Kim English's "Missing You" drops to #10.

"Feelin' So Good," the third single from "Selena" actress Jennifer Lopez's debut On the 6, features cameo raps by Fat Joe and Big Pun. It rises nine spots this week to move into the top 10 at #9. Moby's "Natural Blues," which includes remixes by Beastie Boy Mike D and Paul Oakenfold, continues to climb, reaching #15 this week.
