Rock guitarist 'keeping his options open' after announcement of label president's departure, lawyer says.

Veteran rock guitarist Carlos Santana is "keeping his options open" about remaining with Arista Records — which released his band's Grammy-winning 1999 album, Supernatural — now that the label's storied president, Clive Davis, is leaving, the guitarist's lawyer said in a statement Thursday. Davis, who signed Santana to Columbia Records in the 1960s and worked with him again on Supernatural, will be replaced on July 1 by LaFace Records co-founder Antonio "L.A." Reid, in a shuffle Davis has blamed on Arista parent BMG's mandatory-retirement policy. BMG Entertainment President Strauss Zelnick was quoted in Billboard magazine as saying Arista's top artists would stay at the label, but Santana lawyer John Branca said, "Carlos Santana has made no firm decision about his future recording plans, and he is keeping his options open." ...

Rockers the Goo Goo Dolls will perform their new single, "Broadway," at the 2000 World Music Awards in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The event, which honors top-selling international artists, will be taped Wednesday (May 10) for broadcast May 29 in the U.S. on ABC. ... Nineteen-year-old singer Ray J is working on the follow-up to his 1997 debut, Everything You Want. An anti-censorship activist is calling for a boycott of hard-rockers Metallica, after the band on Monday announced it would give to Napster Inc. the user IDs of 335,000 people using Napster software to trade Metallica MP3s without permission. "Let's explain to Metallica how we feel about being insulted, demeaned and cast aside like yesterday's trash," Nina Crowley, executive director of the Massachusetts Music Industry Coalition, said in a release. Metallica spokesperson Gayle Fine said Tuesday (May 2) the group is providing the names in response to a request from Napster, which Metallica sued last month. ...

'N Sync shot a trailer Friday (April 28) for an upcoming film the pop group is co-writing. The clip, which features the group members pretending to arrive at their own film premiere, will be shown at the Cannes International Film Festival in France on May 16, when they will unveil details about the project. The film will begin shooting in early 2001. "All of us have very distinct personalities, and I think that will come across on film," said member Lance Bass. "And we're hoping to make it a musical, which will help our fans cross over to our film work."
