Three Tenors To Perform At Met Millennium Celebration

Trio's webcast from Las Vegas on Sunday drew 800,000 hits in 18 hours.

The Three TenorsJosé Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti — will appear together for the first time in an evening of staged opera at the Metropolitan Opera's Millennium Celebration in New York on May 11.

The event comes on the heels of the superstar trio's webcast from Las Vegas on Sunday, which drew more than 800,000 hits in 18 hours.

The Met production was greeted with similar enthusiasm. Tickets were priced from $100 to $1,000 for the performance only, while others at $1,750 and $2,500 included the performance and a post-concert gala dinner with the artists at the opera house. As of April 13, the performance was sold out.

The evening will begin with Act II of Umberto Giordano's Andrea Chénier, with Domingo as Andrea Chénier. That will be followed by Act IV of Georges Bizet's Carmen, featuring Carreras as Don José. The final excerpt of the evening will be Act III of Giacomo Puccini's Turandot, with Pavarotti as Calaf.

The performance will be a benefit for the company's pension fund. James Levine will conduct the entire program with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra, chorus and ballet.

The Tenors' live webcast from Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Event Center on Sunday featured a 20-minute behind-the-scenes introduction that included an interview with the trio in which they commented on the potential of music on the Internet. The webcast also featured exclusive rehearsal footage and the entire second half of the live performance (all the popular songs and arias).

A representative said the Tenors are considering webcasting the complete program of their next concert May 7 in Washington, D.C. Webcasts of two Pavarotti concerts later in the year also are planned.
