Cesaria Evora Returns To North America
Soulful Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora, who had a run of sold-out concerts at the end of 1999, will return to North America for 11 more shows this summer.
The tour will kick off June 20 in Philadelphia, where she will perform on a double bill with jazz singer Cassandra Wilson. Wilson, who released Traveling Miles last year, will appear at five of the seven Eastern states. Evora will head west for four more shows, concluding July 2 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Evora's powerful voice has popularized the morna, a bluesy Cape Verdean song style that combines West African percussion, Portuguese fados and Brazilian modhinas. She augmented this international blend on last year's Cafe Atlantico by adding Cuban percussionists and Brazilian cellist Jacques Morelenbaum. The album earned a nomination, Evora's fourth, at last year's Grammy Awards.
