It's All Booty

If it ain't booty-related, Luther "Luke" Campbell ain't interested. Luke Skyywalker rose to prominence in the late '80s as frontman of gluttons-for-censorship outfit 2 Live Crew, and his talents have always resided less in lyrical prowess than in street-smart skills about what, how and whom to exploit.

He doesn't appear on all the tracks of Luke's Freak Fest 2000, which is billed as a soundtrack to a upcoming movie of the same name, but the signature Miami bass sound prevails even in his absence. Centerfold-style cover art helps to visualize what an actual Luke-hosted freak fest might be like: partying in Florida in hot tubs with throngs of bikini-clad women.

Tracks rarely deviate from the double-time bass and drums of songs like "Freak Shawty" (RealAudio excerpt) by Luke and producer Jay "Ski" or "Get Rowdy" (RealAudio excerpt) by Uncle Al and Luke. However, the album's best material results when Luke departs from strict Miami bass and fuses the style with R&B. Standout cut "Talkin' 'Bout" (RealAudio excerpt)— credited to 606 featuring Tee and Luke — has an elastic, slinky bassline, Jodeci-style vocals and, not surprisingly, booty-related lyrics.

Toward the album's end, "Dirty Bottom" teams the Goodie Mob with crooners No Good But So Good and provides a welcome change of pace as the Atlanta rap crew contributes delivery and lyrics that invite the brain briefly into an event dominated thus far exclusively by hips and booty.
