Kidjo, Blades, Evora, Gilberto Head JVC Concert Lineup

Jazz festival includes free performances and percussion program.

An assortment of world-music artists — from bossa-nova legend João Gilberto to an all-star lineup of "Conga Kings" — will appear at New York’s JVC Jazz Festival in June.

Carnegie Hall hosts a number of these events, including a Gilberto solo concert June 16.

On the following night, Pablo Ziegler will headline a tango program that includes performances by singer Julia Zenko from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and dancers from "Forever Tango" and "Tango Argentina."

Other JVC shows at Carnegie Hall include performances by Ruben Blades, Editus and Orquestra Aragon on June 20; a "Spirituals to Swing" event that includes Benin bandleader Angélique Kidjo, New Orleans pianist Allen Toussaint and several gospel ensembles on June 22; Cesaria Evora, with Cassandra Wilson, on June 23; and a Latin-jazz jam featuring Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri and David Sanchez on June 24.

Each show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

Other highlights include a percussion program at Symphony Space on June 23, with Candido, Carlos "Patato" Valdes, Giovanni Hidalgo and Chico Hamilton among the performers. In addition, a free concert at Bryant Park on June 23 will feature a Shanachie Records showcase and the group Salsa Picante.
