It Takes Two

This exciting and sexy album (a reissue of producer Kip Hanrahan's 1987 American Clave release) allegedly consists of nuevo-tango genius Astor Piazzolla's version of the "rough" bordello-spawned tangos from turn-of-the-century Buenos Aires — where the form was born. Today, however, they sound utterly composed, controlled and beautified — though no less stimulating for that. Backing musicians Paquito D'Rivera (sax) and Andy Gonzalez (bass) add a subtle Latin tinge to an extraordinary ensemble playing uniquely Piazzollated music. Accept no substitutes.
