'N Sync Hold On To Top Spot On Albums Chart

Boy band sells 811,298 copies, as "Romeo Must Die" soundtrack, rapper Drag-On debut high.

'N Sync's sales figures last week were more modest than the record-breaking 2.4 million copies moved the week before, but they're still impressive.

The ubiquitous boy band's No Strings Attached, on the strength of such uptempo pop songs as "Bye Bye Bye" (RealAudio excerpt), sold 811,298 copies last week and will remain at #1 on this week's Billboard 200 albums chart, according to SoundScan data released Wednesday (April 5).

No Strings Attached outsold its nearest competitor, Santana's Supernatural, by 600,000 copies. The soundtrack to "Romeo Must Die" came in at #3, the week's highest debut.

The rest of the top 10 will be: Dru Hill singer Sisqo's Unleash the Dragon at #4, rapper Drag-On's Opposite of H20 at #5, rapper/producer Dr. Dre's Dr. Dre 2001 at #6, Ice Cube's War & Peace Vol. 2 (The Peace Disc) at #7, R&B quartet Destiny's Child's The Writing's on the Wall at #8, soul singer Macy Gray'sOn How Life Is at #9 and rapper DMX's ... And Then There Was X at #10.

The soundtrack to "Romeo Must Die" reunites singer Aaliyah and producer Timbaland, who teamed up to record "Are You That Somebody?" for 1998's "Dr. Dolittle" soundtrack. This time they collaborate on two songs, the groove-heavy "Try Again" and "Are You Feelin' Me?" Aaliyah also teams with DMX on "Come Back in One Piece" (RealAudio excerpt). The two co-star in the action film with Jet Li.

Irv Gotti, who produced "Come Back in One Piece," said he enjoyed working with the 20-year-old Aaliyah and may do more R&B work in the future.

"Her lyrics had to be in the space where they allowed X to be X," the producer said of allowing room for DMX's part in the song. "She takes direction really well. You tell her something, she does it."

Drag-On is the latest rapper from the Ruff Ryders label to break into the top 10, following albums by DMX, Eve and the LOX. Opposite of H20 was produced mostly by Swizz Beats and has garnered attention for its raw single "Spit Those Bars." The 20-year-old is touring arenas this month with the rest of the Ruff Ryders stable and the rappers signed to Cash Money.

Outside the top 10, rapper Common's Like Water for Chocolate will debut at #16. The Chicago native said he wanted his album to be as musical as possible.

He invited African bandleader Femi Kuti, Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson and producer DJ Premier along for the ride. R&B singer D'Angelo guests on "Geto Heaven Part 2." The result is an organic sound marked by live drums and melody, including singing on several of the choruses. Songs include "The 6th Sense" and "Heat," a growing club favorite.

"I was expanding my mind to different styles of music, to different approaches," said Common (born Lonnie Rasheed Lynn). "So the artists that I used definitely fit in with that scheme."

Other debuts will include country singer Trisha Yearwood's Real Live Woman, with guest appearances by Jackson Browne and Mary Chapin Carpenter, at #24; punk band Goldfinger's Stomping Ground at #109; the hip-hop soundtrack to the action film "Black and White" at #124; electro-pop group Alice Deejay's Who Needs Guitars Anyway? at #140; and big-beat practitioner Fatboy Slim's On the Floor at the Boutique at #173.

The 'N Sync album has now sold more than 3.2 million copies. It took last year's monster boy-band seller, the Backstreet Boys' Millennium, more than a month to reach the same mark.

Two other chart leaps of note: the soundtrack to "Magnolia," after Aimee Mann's performance of "Save Me" (RealAudio excerpt) at the Academy Awards, will move from #138 to #100.

And Lit's A Place in the Sun, released early last year, will climb from #112 to #84. The video for Lit's "Miserable" features television starlet Pamela Anderson Lee in a two-piece bathing suit.
