Scratch-Happy Kid Koala To Go On Tour
Turntablists Kid Koala and DJ Food and beat-collage producer Amon Tobin will support their recent albums on Ninja Tune Records with a tour that kicks off May 3 in Montreal.
Although only Kid Koala will appear at all dates, the artists will share equal billing on the tour, which will feature music from Kid Koala's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (Feb. 22), DJ Food's Kaleidoscope, released Tuesday (April 4), and Amon Tobin's Supermodified (May 9).
Kid Koala (born Eric San) has been experimenting with hip-hop since the late '80s, and in 1997 he signed to Ninja Tune, which is owned by the legendary UK duo Coldcut. Kid Koala's debut EP, Scratchhappyland, was released later that year as a cassette and 10-inch and is considered a cult classic in the turntable-manipulation subculture.
Amon Tobin's meticulous fusion of drum & bass, hip-hop and Brazilian rhythms is among the most finely crafted in instrumental beat-collage music. His first single on Ninja Tune came out in 1996, followed by the Piranha Breaks EP and two successful albums, 1997's Bricolage and 1998's Permutation. His debut album, Adventures in Foam, was released under the moniker Cujo in 1996.
DJ Food, the abstract hip-hop production duo of PC (born Patrick Carpenter) and Strictly Kev (Kevin Foakes), began releasing their popular Jazz Brakes breakbeat albums — used for sampling and scratching, DJs called them "food" — in 1992 and followed them with the 1995 full-length, A Recipe for Disaster.
