Videohead: Matthew Rolston On Directing Bowie, Beyoncé, And Miley

The noted director discusses his decades in pop music

Matthew Rolston began his career as a photographer after being discovered by Andy Warhol in Los Angeles. He has since shot over 100 Rolling Stone covers and is the last person to have taken a portrait of Michael Jackson. He directed the videos for TLC’s “Creep,” Salt-N-Pepa’s “Whatta Man,” an En Vogue’s “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” before going on to work with Bowie, Beyoncé, Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus, Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Janet Jackson, and Madonna.

On this episode of “Videohead,” Rolston talks about how his obsession with color informs the look of each of his videos. He also talks about working with David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, and “Videohead” favorite Morrissey. Then comedian and Smiths superfan April Richardson is in-studio to talk about Morrissey’s prolific music video career.
