Lenny Kravitz To Tour with Smash Mouth, Buckcherry

Rock singer/songwriter/guitarist to headline 'Freedom' jaunt kicking off in Minneapolis.

Neo-classic rocker Lenny Kravitz and his band will be joined on his upcoming "Freedom" tour by pop-rockers Smash Mouth and hard-rockers Buckcherry.

The month-and-a-half-long tour will kick off Aug. 25 at the Target Center in Minneapolis and wind up Oct. 16 at the GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. Along the way, the three acts will crisscross the United States, playing shows in New York, Georgia, Florida, Texas and California.

In addition to playing songs such as the smash hit "Fly Away," from his fifth album, 5, Kravitz likely will perform his cover of the classic Guess Who song "American Woman" (RealAudio excerpt), which is on the soundtrack to the current box-office smash "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me."

Smash Mouth, the quirky San Jose, Calif., band, will be hitting the stage in support of their sophomore album, Astro Lounge, which features the hit "All Star."

Smash Mouth tried to avoid the one-hit-wonder syndrome after scoring big with their 1997 hit, "Walking on the Sun," singer Steve Harwell said. He added that their intention on the new album was to "keep it fun."

The amiable Harwell said the group was looking to keep its image as a sunny pop band, but also hoping to "grow up a little bit more."

"We really do focus on the fun, danceable stuff," he said. "The last thing we want to do is a boring album."

Los Angeles rockers Buckcherry, who recently performed at Woodstock '99, talked earlier this year about how they have spent time converting fans to the crunching riffs of songs such as their radio hit "Lit Up" (RealAudio excerpt).

Joshua Todd — the tattooed, slinky-framed frontman of Buckcherry — said the "alternative kids in sweaters and Buddy Holly glasses" used to laugh at his band, but now they're among the kids in the Buckcherry "conversion camp" going nuts at their shows.

"You see all kinds of kids now. We have to go in front of so many weird crowds — you name it, we've done it, and pulled fans out of it every time," Todd said (RealAudio excerpt of interview).
