Jamiroquai To Tour Theaters, Clubs, Talk Shows
British retro-funkers Jamiroquai will tour North America in July in support of their
upcoming fourth album, Synkronized, which frontman Jay Kay said has "more
boogie" than their first three.
The tour is scheduled to begin July 4 in San Francisco and travel through the Midwest
and East Coast, wrapping up July 25 in Atlanta, according to a statement from the band's
record company, Sony Music.
Along the way, Jamiroquai will perform on late-night talk shows on both coasts -- "The
Tonight Show With Jay Leno" July 8 in Los Angeles and the "Late Show With David
Letterman" July 22 in New York. They also will play a set at Woodstock '99 on July 23 in
upstate New York.
Synkronized will be released June 8 in the U.S., with the first single, the
disco-inflected "Canned Heat," due May 25. Jonas Ackerlund, who created Madonna's
award-winning "Ray of Light" clip, shot the "Canned Heat" video.
In the tradition of the band's breakthrough video,
"Virtual Insanity" (RealAudio excerpt),
the "Canned Heat" clip shows Kay seeming to perform impossible dance
moves, including walking through walls and jumping in and out of television
sets. The video premiered Saturday at the Faze Festival, a music-video event in New York.
Kay issued a statement expressing excitement about the new album, which he said has
"more boogie factor" than previous ones.
Kay formed Jamiroquai in 1992. Their debut album, Emergency on Planet Earth
(1993), made them instant stars in the UK, but they didn't see significant success in the
U.S. until the release of Travelling Without Moving (1997), which featured "Virtual
Insanity."
Jamiroquai contributed "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" to No Boundaries, a benefit
album due June 14 that will aid Kosovar refugees. The record also features tracks by
Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette and Neil Young.
