Holly's Family Sues For Royalties
The brothers, sister and widow of the late '50s rocker Buddy Holly have filed a
lawsuit against MCA Records. They are seeking millions of dollars of allegedly unpaid
royalties from Holly's music, according to Associated Press and Reuters.
The lawsuit alleges misconduct by the company that includes underpayment of royalties
and the use of invalid contracts, and it asks for the return of some recordings, according
to the reports. Liza deVilla, a spokesperson for Universal Music Group, which owns
MCA, declined to comment on the suit, citing company policy. The influential Holly,
known for such hit singles as "Peggy Sue" (1957) and "Rave On" (1958), died at the age
of 21 in an infamous 1959 plane crash, along with fellow rockers Ritchie Valens
and the Big Bopper (born Jiles Perry Richardson).
