McLachlan, Setzer Dress Up For Grammys

Red carpet into Grammy Awards becomes de facto fashion runway.

As scores of musicians arrived for the 41st Annual Grammy Awards, the red carpet leading to Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium became a de facto fashion runway.

Songstress Sarah McLachlan -- up for Best Female Pop Vocal for "Adia"(RealAudio excerpt) -- strolled the carpet in a sheer blue Robert Gaines dress complemented with a lavender shawl. The Lilith Fair founder arrived arm-in-arm with her husband and drummer Ash Sood.

Garbage singer Shirley Manson appeared in a blue dress, clipped with red safety pins in the back. "I'm just looking forward to the whole event," she said. Garbage is up for Best Rock Album for Version 2.0, which features the song "Push It" (RealAudio excerpt).

Taking the do-it-yourself approach was R&B singer Erykah Badu, who came clad in a yellow head wrap and self-designed dress that was made by a close friend. Badu is up for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her song"Tyrone."

With hopes of taking home one or more of three Grammys, Brian Setzer arrived swank as expected in a gold-sequined suit. The former leader of the Stray Cats is up for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group for his cover of "Jump Jive an' Wail" (RealAudio excerpt), as well as Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Sleepwalk" and Best Pop Album for The Dirty Boogie.

Asked about his role in the modern swing revival, Setzer said, "I mix it all together with rock 'n' roll, and whatever comes out comes out."

Barenaked Ladies songwriter Ed Robertson had a predictably humorous take on the whole affair. Asked if he was nervous about winning a Grammy for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group for his band's song "One Week" (RealAudio excerpt), he deadpanned, "No, we're pretty confident we're going to walk away with a silver medal."
