Fall Singer's Assault Case May Be Dropped

A domestic-assault charge against singer Mark E. Smith of
post-punk rockers the Fall will be dropped if he stays out of
trouble for six months, according to Wayne Brison, a spokesperson for New
York County District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. Smith, who was
arrested last April after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend, Fall keyboardist
Julia Nagle, at a New York hotel, appeared in City Criminal
Court for a brief hearing Monday, Brison said. The case against him was
adjourned until Aug. 21, at which point the charges could be dismissed.
