Melvins Sing About "Worshipping The Devil" Oh Yes!

"psychedelic" than their last, Stoner Witch . As is typical of a
Melvins' album, the songs are not easy to decipher. Take, "Skin Horse," for
instance. Upon hearing the helium, baby-voiced dirge you might be tempted to
laugh and chalk it up as a goof song whipped up on a whim. Not so fast there,
smarty. "That's actually a pretty serious song," says Crover, no hint of
sarcasm in his voice. "It might be funny when you first hear it, but then it
gets kind of spooky. We were trying to make it sound like a music box and we
toyed with getting a real kid to sing on it, but we knew it would be too much
work to get it right, so we just use effects to make the vocals sound like a
kid's. It's really very sad and eerie." Then, of course, there is the song that
appears to be their "Pepper," the seemingly too-smooth "Black Bock." A
sweetly-strummed acoustic ballad that features almost decipherable lyrics and
plaintive vocals, "Bock" is what the band came up with when they decided to
write a "wimpy pop song." But, of course, there is more to it than that. "We
tried to write a wimpy ballad and Buzz was inspired by something he read about
these Nordic satanic bands burning churches...
