Lady Gaga has come a long way since she sang about “living for the fame.” These days, the 30-year-old has more bittersweet feelings about the limelight, which she recently opened up about in an emotional CBS Sunday Morning interview.

“I'm very acutely aware that once I cross that property line, I'm not free anymore. As soon as I go out into the world, I belong, in a way, to everyone else,” she said about her enormous fame. “It's legal to follow me. It’s legal to stalk me at the beach. And I can't call the police or ask them to leave.

“And I took a long, hard look at that property line, and I said, ‘Well, if I can't be free out there, I can be free in here,’” she finished, pointing to her heart.

When asked to elaborate, Gaga wiped away tears and explained, “I miss people. I miss going anywhere and meeting a random person and saying ‘hi’ and having a random conversation about life. I love people.”

Her latest album, Joanne, she explained, was a response to the need to be authentically Stefani Germanotta. She added that “a lot of crying, a lot of pain, a lot of learning about myself” went into the project, especially after a tumultuous year during which she split from Taylor Kinney. The couple ended their engagement in July after five years together, and in the revealing new interview, Gaga hinted at why they drifted apart.

“I think women love very hard,” she said. “We love men. We just love with everything we have. And sometimes I don't know that that love is met with the type of dignity that we wish it would be met with. You know, we're not trying to make you less of a man. We just want you to love us as deeply and as wholesomely and as fully as we love you.”
