Kanye West may live in L.A. now, but his roots run deep in Chicago, where he was raised. Now it looks like the house he lived in as a kid is going to continue his South Side legacy.

Chicago rapper Rhymefest, who co-wrote Kanye’s Grammy-winning song “Jesus Walks,” has purchased the house Kanye shared with his mother, Donda, as a kid. He’s planning on turning it into a “community arts incubator,” a space where local musicians can record tracks and hold concerts.

The house will also serve as a curriculum space for Donda’s House, the nonprofit arts education organization founded in honor of Kanye’s mother in 2013.

“In order to deepen the organization’s impact, Donda’s House has acquired a home facility that will provide a permanent location for all of the Donda’s House family to gather, offer programming, and grow,” the organization said in a statement. “Donda’s House envisions this facility as not only a homegrown hub of economic activity for the South Side but also a gathering place for the community with events and concerts.”

“We want to show bright spots in communities that've been divested from,” Rhymefest wrote in an Instagram caption announcing the purchase of the house. “We know more lights exist here, they just need to be activated.”
