Jennifer Lopez Is Breaking Into The TV Musical Game With 'Bye Bye Birdie'

Jenny From the Block becomes a ‘Spanish Rose’

Jennifer Lopez was hopefully taking notes during Grease Live!, but if she wasn't, she may want to tune into Hairspray Live! as she'll soon be starring in a TV musical of her own.

NBC has announced that the network will bring Bye Bye Birdie from Broadway to your living for the 2017 holiday season.

Lopez will play Rosie, the fiery love interest and cohort of Albert Peterson, a songwriter tasked with working with a rocker, Conrad Birdie, who's about to join the army and be sent abroad. (The musical was initially inspired by Elvis Presley and his stint in the service, and Birdie is more or less a caricature of the greasy-haired rock god.) Bye Bye Birdie takes place in 1950s suburban America, and it was a favorite of Lopez's growing up.

“Broadway musicals and films fueled my childhood and Bye Bye Birdie was one of my favorites," she said in a statement. "I’m proud to be a part of the NBC family with Shades of Blue and I thought it would be a blast to take on one of their big live musicals."

We're still a year out from Bye Bye Birdie, but Hairspray Live! is coming up soon. Also on NBC, the musical is set to air on December 7, and it features Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, and more.
