Did You Catch The Jessica Lange Shout-Out On 'American Horror Story: Roanoke'?

Blink and you would’ve missed it

Wednesday night’s episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke was literally unlike anything the show’s done before. “Chapter 6” finally gave us an on-camera look at Cheyenne Jackson and a full introduction to the My Roanoke Nightmare actors and “real-life” inspirations — and we learned that the show, while widely successful, basically ruined their lives. After weeks of not having the entire cast on a single episode, the gang finally got back together — which also included Jessica Lange. Sort of.

When actor Agnes Mary Winstead (Kathy Bates) sits down for an interview with My Roanoke Nightmare show-runner Sidney (Jackson), she mentions the two greatest roles an actor can play: one of which is Mary Tyrone from Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night. Lange just finished playing that character in Broadway’s revival of the classic play.

Lange told Entertainment Weekly in 2013 that Freak Show would be her last season on the spooky series, citing the show’s six-month commitment as a reason for a break. “I want to have more time to myself I guess. Once it’s over and I have a full year ahead of me with nothing to do, who knows?” she said. Her run on Long Day’s Journey into Night lasted from April to June 2016.

Fans always hoped Lange would return, but as of this writing, she has not. But that doesn’t stop AHS from tossing in fun nods like the one above to honor the alum.
