JoJo Explains Why She Once Wished She Could ‘Develop An Eating Disorder’

She thought losing weight would help her music career

In the U.S., 30 million people live with live-threatening eating disorders. JoJo secretly wanted to be one of them in her teens — a "sick" desire she revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight< on Monday (October 10).

"I was told that if I didn't look a certain way that they wouldn't put out my music," the pop singer, now 25, said. "I wished at that time that I could develop an eating disorder. I don't think that now, so please don't take that out of context. ... I was so frustrated with myself that I was eating."

JoJo put out two records following the success of 2004's "Leave (Get Out)" but then ran into legal troubles with her label. So she experimented with dangerous weight loss methods, believing losing a few pounds would move her career forward.

"I was on shots. I was injecting myself with this thing from this dietician that makes it so you’re not hungry, and it tricks your body into thinking you're pregnant, so then the food that it would give the baby, it ends up, like, expelling," JoJo explained, adding that she ate a dangerously low 500 calories per day. Though she was never officially diagnosed with an eating disorder, disordered eating habits can still be really harmful to your body and mind. "Am I not good enough?" she often wondered.

Today, however, she's more resilient than ever and thrilled to be releasing her comeback album, Mad Love, this Friday. Its lead single, "Fuck Apologies," is an anthem for anyone who's tired of being told what to do.

"[I'm not apologizing] for loving who I love, for doing what I need to do, for being hungry, for chasing after my dreams," JoJo continued. "I'm really not sorry for being myself."
