Demi Lovato Will Replace Selena Gomez As Global Citizen Fest Headliner

The 'Body Say' singer will fill in for Gomez, who's taking a health-related break from performing

In a whole-hearted effort to "maintain her health and happiness," Selena Gomez is stepping away from the stage for the time being to heal and address some unfortunate side effects of lupus, the auto-immune disease she's currently fighting. This means that she won't be headlining the Global Citizen Festival in New York City, via People, but it turns out an old friend and Disney cohort will be taking her place.

Demi Lovato has confirmed that she's now headlining the one-day event in Central Park, which features Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, and more.

Lovato — who's a passionate advocate for those suffering from mental illness — supports Global Citizens's agenda in promoting "mental health, well-being, and gender equality." In an additional statement, she said that Global Citizen "combines music and activism in a way that inspires and affects millions around the world," and that she's proud to be a part of the event and organization's mission to "improve global healthcare and to end extreme poverty."

It's a bummer that Gomez won't be a part of the festival, but it sounds like Global Citizen found a stellar replacement just in time for the main event on September 24.
