Greg Berlanti, Superhero Savior, Will Direct Coming-Out Drama 'Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda'

The creator of the Arrowverse is bringing Simon Spier’s unusual coming-out story to the big screen

Greg Berlanti, the man currently in charge of television's booming DC universe, has found his next project: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Berlanti is currently in talks to direct the feature film adaptation of Becky Albertalli's tender debut YA novel about a teen's less-than-ideal coming-out journey. Albertalli's endearing novel follows Simon Spier, a closeted teen who begins corresponding with an anonymous gay classmate online. However, when someone gets ahold of their intimate emails, Simon finds himself being blackmailed: He either plays along, or his sexual identity will become everyone's business. (It's a rather stressful, yet oddly delightful junior year for Simon.)

Anyone who's familiar with Berlanti's pioneering work on Dawson's Creekhe wrote primetime television's first gay kiss — knows that he's the perfect director for this project. Even Albertalli is couldn't contain her excitement.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda will be Berlanti's third feature film credit; he previously helmed Life As We Know It and The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy. Meanwhile, he's currently juggling producing duties on Arrow, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and the newest addition to his CW empire, Riverdale. (It was revealed in August that a significant character in the Arrowverse will come out this year.) He's also starting development on Freedom Fighters: The Ray for CW Seed. The animated series is the first ever to feature a gay DC superhero lead.

Some people talk about change — and others make change happen. Berlanti is clearly a disciple of the latter.
