Kanye West's erratic 11-minute monologue at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, ostensibly his acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award, will be remembered best for Kanye announcing his potential 2020 presidential bid. How do you top that?

At this year's VMAs, Kanye found a way: dropping a sweltering, Flashdance-inspired, brand-new music video for his The Life of Pablo track "Fade" starring actress and singer Teyana Taylor.

MTV originally gave Yeezy "four minutes" of air time tonight to do whatever he felt was right. Naturally, Kanye upped the ante by surprise-dropping the sultry video, which he directed himself. (You might remember Taylor, who appears in a steamy shower scene with her husband, NBA champ and Cleveland Cavalier Iman Shumpert, from her 2007 appearance on MTV's My Super Sweet 16.)

Because you can't give Kanye a mic without expecting some kind of stream-of-consciousness rant, he prefaced the vid with plenty of rambling (that was also coherent in its own way!), including his thoughts about art, life, and the VMAs in general. "I came here to present my new video, but before I do that, I'ma talk," Ye began, before throwing it back. "Now, later tonight, 'Famous' might lose to Beyoncé [for Video of the Year], but I can't be mad. I'm always wishing for Beyoncé to win."

Kanye also shouted out Ray J (ex of his wife, Kim Kardashian West) and Amber Rose (Kanye's own ex), whose nude wax likenesses appear in the "Famous" video, by name. "I put Ray J in it, bro! This is fame, bro! I see you, Amber." Yeezy said before clarifying: "My wife is a G. Not a lot of people's wives would let them say that."

It made sense for Ye to stump for his "Famous" video and to defend it like the dynamic artistic thesis it is. And the only way to follow that up is with a sexually charged fever-dream workout video like "Fade." When you get Kanye on a stage — floating or otherwise — anything can happen.
